About Undergraduate Researcher of the Month

Purpose:  to highlight and recognize high quality undergraduate research and scholarship across the full spectrum of research and scholarship at UC.

Selection Criteria:

Duration: the student must have been actively engaged on the project/activity for more than two quarters at the time of nomination.

Accomplishment: the nomination file should contain the completed nomination form as well as tangible evidence of accomplishment on the project/activity, in a form typical of the specific discipline (poster, talk/presentation, showing, publication, other)

GPA:  the student’s GPA must be included to provide a broad perspective of the student.  However, GPA will not be a major factor in the selection process.

Research supervisor recommendation: the nomination file must contain a letter of support for the nomination from the student’s research supervisor or mentor.  A second letter from a person knowledgeable about the student’s project/activity is optional (for example, if the student is working on a project joint between two faculty, or has worked on two different projects with two different faculty members).  No more than two letters, please.

Process:

Selection of the Undergraduate Research Student of the Month will be made by a subcommittee of the University Undergraduate Research Council, based on the above criteria as reflected in the nomination packet (see below):

Nomination packet:  The packet should include a completed nomination form, evidence of accomplishment as described in the criteria (above) and letter(s) of recommendation by research mentor(s) (limit of 2).  Nominations will be accepted from all parties, including (but not limited to) the student (self-nomination) and the research/project mentor.  Nominations will be accepted throughout the academic year (September to June) with no fixed deadlines.
