Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Research

Creating a culture of impact, innovation & inclusion across the research enterprise.

About

The DEI in Research initiative at UC is a strategic initiative of Research2030, UC’s 10-year plan for research. Our initiative is 3-pronged and is composed of the DEI in Research Fellowship, the DEI in Research Advisory Council and the DEI in Research Digest. The DEI in Research Initiative is aligned with UC’s Next Lives Here Strategic Direction which has a major focus on Inclusive Excellence.

Goals

The DEI in Research initiative was launched with three goals in mind: Goal #1: To gain a baseline understanding of the current culture of research at UC and advance an inclusive culture of research at UC through the establishment of equitable and inclusive best practices. Goal #2: To elevate the impact and outcomes of research for all at UC and increase the number of diverse investigators submitting proposals and securing external funding for their work #3: To celebrate, amplify, support, develop and nurture our diverse talent by seeking out and nominating more women and BIPOC faculty for nationally competitive research awards and research fellowships.

THE DEI IN RESEARCH DIGEST

In 2021, The Office of Research launched a thematic newsletter with three goals: 1. Sharing diverse personal stories and experiences related to DEI in research at UC; 2. Shining a light on national conversations, articles, and insights focused on DEI matters in research; and 3. Promoting opportunities that seek to reduce barriers to inclusion in research. The DEI in Research Digest is curated by staff and associates to the UC Office of Research Programs & Initiatives unit and in coordination with the DEI in Research Fellow, Post-doc, and Advisory Council. To subscribe, email research@uc.edu.

The DEI in Research Fellowship

In 2019, The Office of Research launched a Research Fellowship program, aimed at developing the research administrative skillset of mid-career faculty who show interest in research leadership at the college- and enterprise-level. In 2021, the Office of Research established another fellowship program focused on DEI. The DEI in Research Fellowship program will focus its attention on DEI in Research at UC. Activities include analyzing and reporting on the state of DEI in Research@UC. In partnership with the Provost Office, Graduate School, Institutional Research, the UC Archives, and others, our 2021-22 DEI in Research Fellow will be working to provide UC Research leadership with the baseline data, insights, and recommendations necessary to proactively define and address barriers to inclusion in research at UC.
