As the UC community comes together with industry, government, and the non-profit sector during Research + Innovation Week, we reflect on the enduring legacy of Dr. John Michelman and the profound impact of his contributions to science and the university. This year’s R+I Week features a special poster session that illustrates how Dr. Michelman’s vision and partnership with the UC Office of Research is growing research with environmental impact at UC and making a difference in society.
Dr. Michelman, a cherished alumnus and Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, left a formidable legacy of environmental stewardship through his tenure at Michelman, Inc. His career was marked by the development of sustainable products that have set new standards for industry practices.
In a recent discussion, Vice President for Research Pat Limbach shared the history and development of his partnership with the Michelman family. “John’s commitment to sustainability and his engagement with our university has not only propelled our research capabilities but has also been a source of inspiration for our students and faculty,” Limbach said. Following an initial gift in 2016 to establish a scholarship program in A&S, Dr. Michelman had an idea about helping propel applied research across UC focused on green, clean technologies. Those conversations between Dr. Michelman and the VPR led to UC’s Office of Research establishing the Michelman Green, Clean, and Sustainable Technology Research Innovation Program.
In recognition of Dr. Michelman’s commitment to sustainability research at UC, the R&I Week poster session will feature multiple projects by UC faculty and their teams, the envisioned application of their work society, and what the potential and intended real-world implications are of the work. More than half of the featured projects have been supported through the Michelman program. The poster session and reception honoring Dr. Michelman is free and open to the public. It will occur from 3:30 – 5:00 pm on Monday, April 29th in UC’s Digital Futures building (3080 Exploration Avenue).
