A Year in Review: Bioscience and the Bioeconomy

A Year in Review: Bioscience and the Bioeconomy

The Office of Research’s Bioscience & the Bioeconomy (B&B) vertical was created to expand the boundaries of discovery and innovation in both the life and sustainability sciences. At the heart of our Bioscience efforts are researchers making groundbreaking advancements in digital medicine, nanobiomaterials, and medical devices. Meanwhile, our Bioeconomy initiatives bring together cross-disciplinary teams to tackle critical questions around natural resource sustainability at the nexus of food, energy, and water.

Advancing Research Excellence in Bioscience & Bioeconomy

As part of our Bioscience & the Bioeconomy (B&B) vertical, a team of cross-disciplinary, nanobioscience experts is driving research excellence at UC. Facilitated by Dr. Ken Greis, this dynamic executive advisory board seeks to leverage UC’s research strengths and elevate our standing as a premier leader in biosciences research.

Focusing on the multidisciplinary field of nanobiosciences—encompassing nanomaterials, interfaces, biosensing; nanotherapeutics, diagnostics, and drug delivery; and cellular toxicity and environmental impact—the board aims to advance UC's impact on health, wellness, and fitness.

This summer, the executive advisory board is dedicated to studying other leading institutions and developing new one-of-a-kind programs congruent with UC’s existing faculty expertise, reinforcing UC’s commitment to innovative and impactful research. The Research + Innovation Week Michelman Poster Session

During Research + Innovation Week, the Office of Research honored John Michelman and his commitment to Green, Clean, and Sustainable Research at UC. The poster session featured multiple projects by UC faculty and their teams, the envisioned application of their work, and the potential and intended real-world implications of the work.

Announcing the Michelman Green, Clean, and Sustainable Technology Research Innovation Program

Courtesy of the generous contributions of the Dr. John S. Michelman Fund for the Advancement of Sustainable Technology, the Michelman Green, Clean, and Sustainable Technology Research Innovation Program supports applied R&D and use-inspired research with the potential to meaningfully contribute to improvements in environmental health, environmental stewardship, and sustainability by demonstrating new and marketable scientific and technical innovations intended to address real-world problems in the Green-tech and Clean-tech fields.

Applicants for the third cohort of Michelman grantees could apply as either single investigators or multi-investigator teams. Grantees were selected based on the quality, novelty, and creativity of their proposed applied research topic which demonstrated a clear potential to make tangible contributions that improve societal outcomes. Single investigator grantees were awarded up to $35,000 and multi-investigator teams were eligible for up to $80,000 for a 24-month project period to accelerate their applied R&D activities to the point that they can obtain external funding.

Awardees will be announced in the August issue of Findings!
