The
Leather Research Laboratory, a distinguished unit within the Office of Research, celebrates its centennial anniversary this year. To honor this milestone, the lab will host an open house this Friday, November 1st, inviting visitors to explore its state-of-the-art facilities and learn about its rich history. Additionally, the
Leather and Hide Council of America (LHCA) will recognize the lab’s achievements with a special reception at their Fall meeting in Chicago.
Founded in 1924 as “The Tanners Lab” located on the Clifton Campus, the Leather Lab quickly established itself as a leader in leather research, earning praise from President Herbert Hoover as “the most important step made by any of our trade associations in the direction of scientific research for the benefit of an entire industry.” The lab moved in 2001 to a modern facility on the Center Hill Campus, designed specifically for advanced leather performance testing and research. As the only academic-based center of excellence dedicated to leather testing in the USA, the Leather Lab boasts an ISO 17025 certification and offers unparalleled expertise in the field, delivering insights that impact quality, product development, marketing, and consumer safety.
Over the years, the Leather Lab has provided tailored testing solutions for a diverse range of clients, including Japanese automotive manufacturers, U.S. aircraft companies, and leading institutions like the Sponge & Chamois Institute. By assisting clients across industries in meeting rigorous quality and compliance standards, the lab has become a trusted partner for automotive emissions testing, aviation upholstery certification, and more.
Through a century of change, the Leather Lab’s mission remains steadfast: to provide customized leather testing and technology training at the highest level of scientific excellence and professional integrity. This year, each course offered by the lab will include a mini celebration, featuring limited edition 100th anniversary swag.
With these celebrations and ongoing dedication to leather research, the Leather Research Laboratory continues to set the standard for excellence in the industry, embodying their century-long commitment to innovation and education.
