The Fulbright Scholar Award fosters research excellence. Often, early career faculty feel the very real pressure of the tenure clock; however, the value of an international experience can be profound and make a real, positive difference in the life and
career trajectory of an assistant professor, according to many, including UC professors who have embarked on the Fulbright journey. “My Fulbright experience was life-changing,” says Marianne Lewis, PhD, Dean of the Lindner College of Business.
She recalls her year studying leadership dynamics in the UK: “It was like the ultimate co-op, where every conversation brought a new layer of insight into my work and career. I was drafting an early version of my book while exploring the ways
top UK business schools approach leadership, and I came back with ideas that transformed how I teach and lead.”
Similarly, Professor Charles Matthews, who completed a Fulbright in Lithuania, reflects on his time teaching and researching abroad as an invaluable period for both his professional and personal growth. “Engaging with new colleagues and students,
especially doctoral students from across Europe, opened up new perspectives in my own research,” he explains. “But it also gave me a chance to step back, reflect, and renew — something only possible when you’re immersed in
a different environment."
