At the University of Cincinnati, the next wave of research culture is grounded in respect, trust, and collaboration. Dr. Kelly Cohen (pictured, left), leader of the Digital Futures AI Bio Lab, and Dr. Prashant Khare (pictured, right), leader of the Digital Futures Hypersonics Lab, exemplify these values through a mentorship dynamic that highlights mutual support and growth.

Dr. Kelly Cohen and Dr. Prashant Khare, left to rightDr. Cohen’s empathetic guidance provided Dr. Khare with the tools to thrive as a new faculty member, fostering his development into a leader, now serving as the Department Head of Aerospace Engineering. For Dr. Khare, respect has been the cornerstone of their relationship, while Dr. Cohen’s mentorship offered invaluable situational awareness and encouragement.

Their mutual admiration is reflected in their award nominations for one another—Cohen nominated Khare for the Young Investigator Award in 2020, and Khare nominated Cohen for the Provost Faculty Career Award in 2022. These gestures showcase their pride in each other’s accomplishments and their commitment to celebrating success collaboratively.

Cohen emphasizes that mentorship is about shared success rather than competition, stating, "When Prashant succeeded, I celebrated because it reflects our partnership." This dynamic not only supported Khare’s career but also fostered a culture where students’ achievements are celebrated, creating a thriving academic and research community at UC.

As Khare notes, "Nobody stands on their own; everyone stands on somebody’s shoulders." Their story demonstrates how mentorship built on respect and empathy can elevate individuals and transform the broader research culture. Together, they serve as a model for the entire UC community.
