UC ranks in the top 100 in the inaugural Cure Innovation Index

The University of Cincinnati ranked among the nation’s leading research institutions in the inaugural Cure Innovation Index, a new, data-driven assessment designed to evaluate how effectively organizations translate scientific discovery into real-world healthcare solutions.

Drawn from a pool of over 6,000 institutions, the Index ranks the top 303 based on dozens of indicators spanning research infrastructure, funding, partnerships, patents, clinical impact, and more. UC placed No. 62 among universities nationwide, with particularly strong performance in two of the three categories: Research Capabilities and Market Translation.

The ranking highlights UC’s continued investment in the foundational elements that support high-quality research. In the Research Capabilities category, which evaluates the infrastructure and resources that enable innovative science, UC ranked No. 59, performing especially well in funding support. This strength reflects the university’s sustained commitment to building and maintaining the systems necessary for discovery, from laboratory environments to clinical research programs.

UC also demonstrated above-average performance in Market Translation, ranking No. 52. This category measures how effectively institutions move scientific discoveries beyond the lab into clinical and commercial applications. Strong results in this area point to the university’s ability to generate health impact through its research, supported by faculty-led clinical trials, translational science initiatives and partnerships that extend the reach of its work.

“The Cure Innovation Index provides a useful framework for understanding how institutions translate research into impact,” said Frank Gerner, interim vice president for research. “It’s encouraging to see UC recognized for the strength of its research foundation and its ability to move discoveries into practice.”

The Index also identifies Entrepreneurial Readiness as an area where UC has opportunity for continued growth. The university ranked No. 99 in this category, which assesses the extent to which institutions foster entrepreneurship and support faculty engagement in commercialization.

Taken together, the results illustrate a research enterprise that is firmly grounded in discovery while continuing to expand its capacity for innovation and commercialization. UC’s MD-PhD program and its designation as a Clinical and Translational Science Award recipient further reflect this balance, supporting both fundamental research and pathways to application.

Beyond the institutional level, the Index also highlights the broader context in which UC operates. Ohio was ranked the No. 5 state in the nation for biomedical innovation, based on both the number of institutions represented and their overall performance. The state’s placement underscores the strength of its collective research ecosystem, which includes a mix of universities, hospitals and independent institutes contributing to scientific and clinical advancement.

Among those institutions, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center was ranked No. 10 nationally among biomedical institutes. Cincinnati Children’s maintains a close academic affiliation with UC, and its performance reflects the strength of the region’s collaborative research environment.

For UC, the Cure Innovation Index provides both recognition and a benchmark for future progress. The university’s strong showing in Research Capabilities and Market Translation affirms the effectiveness of its current approach, while the Entrepreneurial Readiness category offers a clear area for continued development.

“The university’s continued focus on strengthening our innovation ecosystem, while maintaining core research strengths, will be key to building on this foundation,” says Gerner. “With a strong position within both the national landscape and the state of Ohio’s broader research network, we are well positioned to further expand the reach and impact of our work.”
